Spinfield: Web marketing trends today, tomorrow, and beyond…

A report by Internet search marketing firm Internet Engine shows search results for online vendors are overshadowing those by brick and mortar retailers. In its Retail Search Presence Study, the company analyzed search results from the three major search engines – Google, Yahoo, and MSN Live – for the past three years during the holiday season. What they found was “online retailers, such as Amazon, are winning the Internet search battle against traditional retailers.”

The results show that online retailers have a very strong presence in the search engines, representing over 30 percent of the listings shown. Brick and mortar retailers, on the other hand, show up only 12 percent of the time.

So what does all this mean?  Most people are still buying what they need in stores. E-commerce is less than four percent of the US retail market. But that number is growing. Traditional retailers could extend their reach by increasing their online efforts, and bring in more customers.  Read about the report here and at the Internet Engine blog.   It’s fascinating.
