Internet marketing, and all the terms that go with it, mean different things to different people. Below are a few terms common to the industry, followed by brief definitions about what I understand them to mean. So the next time you SEM starts talking about SEO and other hot topics, you won’t be completely lost.
Let’s start with a biggie. What is Internet Marketing anyway?
- Internet Marketing - an all-inclusive term for marketing products and/or services online and the strategies that are used. These include, but are not limited to search engine optimization, search engine submission, Web site design, reciprocal linking, and e-mail marketing, and online promotions. It is also referred to as Web marketing, online marketing, Internet advertising, or E-marketing.
- Search Engine Optimization - the process of editing and organizing a Web site and its content to increase its ranking in search engines for specific keywords.
- Aggregator - No it’s not a misspelling for alligator. It’s a site, such as Bloglines or Google Reader, which collects designated information specifically for you.
- Blog - Short for Web log. A self-published Web site written in a journal format. It may include text, audio, and/or video. Blogs are used by many businesses to draw awareness to products and services.
- Blogroll - Wikipedia describes it as “A list of blogs, usually placed in the sidebar of a blog, that reads as a list of recommendations by the blogger of other blogs.” Sounds good to me.
- RSS - Really Simple Sydication. It’s the XML format which allows you to subscribe to content on social media like blogs and podcasts. So go ahead and sign-up for The Spinfield!
Those are just a few randomly selected words. Maybe I’ll add a few more in the near future. Dallas Internet Marketing has a long list if you want more words now. You could be talking like a pro in no time.
