Embarrassing or Inaccurate Blog Posts

It seems we’ve all done it.  We’ve published an article online which contains emotions, misinformation, or outright mistakes.  For instance the item you cleverly blogged about for your client is $99.99, not $9.99. Or the meeting is in September, not October.  And maybe that article you commented on didn’t really deserve such harsh criticism.

So you simply delete the post, thinking the article is gone and all is well in the world again. Not so fast.  In this day of RSS readers like Google Reader, your post may appear for a long, long time.

Don’t panic.  There is a solution.   Planet Ocean Communications, Inc.’s SearchEngineNews.com suggests the following:

  • Change the content in the post. Don’t delete it.
  • Edit the post to read “This post no longer exists,” or “This post was deleted.”
  • Or update the post with the correct information.

The post will eventually be re-crawled and the cache updated, showing the corrected copy as long as the item ID remains the same. This works for Google Reader,  but not all readers.  So the best advice still remains, as SearchEngineNews.com suggests,  to “ read twice and publish once so that your emotions don’t get the best of you when putting forth new content to the masses.”
