Social Network Overload

With so many different social networking sites, such as: Facebook , Myspace , Twitter , 12Seconds , Digg , Flickr , hi5 , Care2 , LinkedIn , okay, let’s just make this easier, here’s an entire list . How are you able to make sure that you are spending enough time on each in order for it to actually make a difference for you, or your company?

First off, it’s hard enough for me to remember my login and password for each site. Some of them use a user ID while others use my e-mail address. And also just to be safe I’m always sure to change my password from site to site, so it’s hard to keep them straight.

The point of social networking is to make sure that you are doing just that, networking. It doesn’t help to have an account if you aren’t going to use it to its full advantage. You need to make sure that you have enough time during the week to check the site, make updates, and create new contacts, otherwise anything that you put into it is going to waste.

People who try to network with you may even get aggravated that you don’t reply back to their comments or accept their friend requests right away, which can turn a possible great contact situation into something sour. They will not want to work with you or your company if they think your lack of enthusiasm and inefficiency level is going to mirror your time spent trying to create your contact/client list.

With how Internet based many companies are becoming today social networking is not something that should be overlooked. It’s important to make sure that you are putting yourself (or your company) out there for people to find. Having 19 billion contacts isn’t going to do you any good either if you can’t remember how you met that person or what significance they have to help benefit you.

One last tip for your social networking adventure: be sure to comment on other people’s work, to recommend co-workers, and to be as involved in other peoples’ pages as you’d like them to be in yours!
