- Hopefully everyone had a fun and safe 4th of July! Once again Search Engine Roundtable has compiled 4th of July logos from around the search engine world. They even have logos from years past: 2007, 2006, 2005, and 2004. They’ve come a long way! Enjoy!
- Ask.com has acquired Lexico Publishing Group LLC through a deal made last week. This group is the owner of the popular sites dictionary.com, thesaurus.com and reference.com.
- Controversy broke out last week when Viacom was granted rights to YouTube’s records of users. Viacom is suing Google for allowing their copyrighted material to be viewed on YouTube. They were granted rights to all records of every video ever watched including users’ names and IP addresses. Clearly many people are upset at the privacy violations involved, including Danny Sullivan!
- Google is putting forth their effort to help educate and engage people for the 2008 election. They have created a 2008 US Election Trends site which provides the most searched elections-related terms and information on which candidates are popular by city. They also have a gadget to add the Candidate Queries Map to your iGoogle page.
- Last week, Microsoft purchased Powerset. Powerset uses natural language search allowing people to enter keywords, phrases, or simple questions as they would normally speak. They are known for using their search with Wikipedia currently.
- Yahoo! has been promoting their new Olympic section of their sports site. Yahoo! Sports Summer Games site is the place to visit for updated coverage of the Summer Games in Beijing.
