We could have all guessed that the newspaper advertising revenue was declining due to the amount of advertising that is being done on the Internet, but let’s take a look at some numbers to get a real feel for the slump.
According to notes in the article, “Report: Newspapers Facing Worst Ad Year on Record,” written by Mark Hefflinger and information taken from “Drastic Decrase Predicted in Number of Major U.S. Newspapers,” on America.gov:
- It has been estimated that in 20 years most newspapers will end printing
- The advertising revenue has gone down around 20% in the last 2 years
- People under 30 years old do not read the newspaper as much as they get their news online
- The idea that a story is finished once it has been published is old news; people look for updates
- Today people are interested in the multimedia that goes along with a story, not just the print
With this being said, the best thing for your company to do is to advertise and/or market your company online. Do whatever you can, and use every resource possible. Update your stories or information to make people check back daily. The use of multimedia is growing rapidly so adding some sort of video or podcast feature will most likely be very beneficial.
Do what you can now to help promote your company rather than watching it become extinct alongside the newspapers.
