I don’t Twitter. I’m on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Care2, and visit those sites fairly often, but just couldn’t get into Twittering. Playing games on Facebook, reading about health, environmental and humanitarian issues on Care2, and catching up with colleagues on LinkedIn are all things that I like to do. Broadcasting to the world my current status is not.

So why is it that I find myself Plurking? Well it started because I think the name is funny. They give an explanation of where the name Plurk came from on their blog. And Plurk Buddy, their version of MySpace’s Tom, well he’s pretty funny too.

What is Plurk? According to their site:

What is Plurk?

Noun. plurk (plüer-kh) - A really snazzy site that allows you to showcase the events that make up your life in deliciously digestible chunks. Low in fat, 5 calories per serving, yet chock full of goodness.

Verb. plurk (plüer-kh) - To chronicle the events of your always on, action-packed, storybook, semi-charmed kinda life.

Other Plurk features that I like include:

  • Karma. Like some social media sites such as Reddit and Mixx, Plurk assigns Karma points to encourage participation. The more active you are on Plurk, the more points you get. The more points you have, the more options you have for your Plurk profile.
  • Timeline. Your Plurks appear in a timeline, with the most recent plurks on the right, horizontally across the page. You can view just your plurks, private plurks, or the plurks of you and your friends.
  • Cliques and private plurks. You can separate your friends into cliques, and send plurks to specific groups, instead of broadcasting to everyone. You can also send private plurks to individuals or post one for yourself.
  • Media. You can share videos from YouTube, and images from Photobucket, Flickr and other image sites by pasting the url to the image or video in your Plurk box. Once you have plurked, a thumbnail of the video or image appears next to your name on the timeline.

Give Plurk a shot, and tell me what you think! Also for more tips and hints on Plurking, be sure to check out this unofficial Plurktionary, created by Daisy Olsen.
