Personally, I couldn’t stand it when I went to watch a film in the theater and on top of the usual movie previews there are television commercials and other ads you would normally not expect to see in a theater. Why are these ads here? This takes away from the escapism of the theater experience. My initial reaction was annoyance. But now, I am used to them and find myself occasionally paying attention.
It makes me wonder about the ads YouTube is now running at the bottom of some videos. I’m sure people find them a nuisance. People don’t like being bombarded with ads from places that did not have them before. It reminds me of the scene from Minority Report when Tom Cruise is out for a morning jog and he passes under a tunnel that has ads being displayed digitally on the underside of the tunnel. I thought it was an odd place to advertise, but why not?
Like my initial reaction to the ads in the theater, I didnt like it but, I eventually I grew to accept it. The same will happen with YouTube advertisements. I checked an older blog post from the YouTube team regarding the ads and most of the reactions were negative.
Are YouTube ads just plain annoying or genius to push the reach of advertising even further? I would say both. Initially people will find the ads annoying, but eventually the ads will be regarded as the norm and we will start to pay attention to them. Even if our initial reaction is kicking and screaming, in the end it will just create more opportunities to reach out and connect with consumers.

Good Article man, you are right, people are on You Tube too much when it comes to marketing, Spam and marketing are too closely related now, and now, it’s beyond just normal email exchanged for this, but now on websites, you got so many ads, you can’t figure out what you are on the website to do. It’s confusing now.

I agree that Google needs to make money off youtube.
I also think that ads are a good way to do so.
But, I don’t think they could have chosen a worse place to put them. Most of the time, they are just in the way and taking away from the overall experience. Also, for some reason, they contribute negatively because for me, all videos are slower to load and buffering is a problem for me even though it was never before.
Just my two cents.

“The squeaky wheel gets the oil, Or replaced.”
We’ve alredy made Google a giant. Prepare for an exodus. There’s too many alternatives like youku, soapbox, thepiratebay.org, isohunt, limewire, etc … for people to endure such intrusive advertising.
If you can’t block the ad in your hosts file you simply block the site hosting the ad.
