Word of mouth is a quick and easy way to let others know what you like, dislike, and/or has caught your attention. Today, word of mouth is only one of the several ways people are spreading information, and it’s probably one of the slowest! As the means of communication expand, the amount of communication is increasing rapidly.

How many people do you talk to in a day? Face-to-face , a handful or more, but don’t forget about phone conversations , text messages and online messengers . Now, add in the messages on facebook, LinkedIn and myspace . Don’t leave out e-mails or blog comments . Wow! The list can go on and on.

These new forms of communication are becoming more accessible. Many people are no longer just talking and sharing with their friends and colleagues; they are conversing with people from across the globe who share similar interests.

The web, email, mobile, messenger and the waves of new peer to peer sharing techniques have provided almost frictionless channels for the spread of messages, while social media and web centric communities have provided anchors for identity, cultural capital, and on occasions marketing messages, to be perpetuated and endorsed.

“How to make viral messages infectious: techniques in viral marketing”

Danny Meadows-Klue

With most of this fast-paced communication happening online, it is becoming vital for companies to market themselves on the Internet. According to Wikipedia, Viral Messages are “marketing messages that are passed from person to person through their Social Networks.” (To read more about Social Networks check out our Social Networking link under our Tags!)

How do you make sure your message is “viral” and catches the attention of others? Well, for starters, it must:

  • Contain relevant content.
  • Come from a reliable source.
  • Share compelling information.

It should be information or a tip that someone immediately feels the need to pass on to others.

So the moral of the story? Keep your contact lists growing , and spread a positive word about sites and sources that interest you. The Social Network cycle should then come back around and help spread the word about your product or business quickly.
