Spinfield: Web marketing trends today, tomorrow, and beyond…

I’m sure most of you have heard about Twitter by now, but do you use it? I have to admit that I do not. There is a line to my private life that I think Twitter might cross. However, I read an interesting article by Robert Scoble that had to do with Twitter.

There was an earthquake in China yesterday (May12) where the epicenter was 50 miles from Chengdu, which has about 10.5 million residents. Robert made a statement on his blog that he reported the quake before the USGS and CNN. How can a tech blogger do such a thing? The answer is quite simple. Twitter.

While Robert was twittering or tweeting yesterday, he ran across some people from China who updated their twitter accounts that they were feeling the quake AS IT WAS HAPPENING. He immediately started pointing to others who had information about the quake. He was the first to break the news, before the USGS knew about it and about an hour before CNN had any information about it. Here is an excerpt from what Robert said in his blog.

I reported the major quake to my followers on Twitter before the USGS Website had a report up and about an hour before CNN or major press started talking about it. Now there’s lots of info over on Google News.

How did I do that? Well, I was watching Twitter on Google Talk. Several people in China reported to me they felt the quake WHILE IT WAS GOING ON!!!

This is just another example, one of many, showing how social networks and social media are changing the world. Sites like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Digg, etc. are the places people go to today to get information. If businesses want to tap into these people, they need to be there too.
