Can Yahoo! Do Enough to Keep Microsoft Away?

For the past two months the big news in the Search Engine world has been Microsoft’s attempt to take over Yahoo!. Yahoo! has so far refused Microsoft’s offer, stating that the company is worth more, and will not negotiate unless Microsoft raises its bid. Microsoft has refused to raise their bid, insisting that it is a generous offer based on Yahoo’s closing price on Jan 31, and has stated that if Yahoo! continues to decline their offer they will take it directly to the shareholders.

This past week has been a whirlwind of activity for Yahoo!, doing what it can to stave off Microsoft’s hostile bid and exemplify the value of the company. Yahoo! announced on Wednesday that they will be teaming up with Google for an online advertising test that will last two weeks. This test will put Google generated ads alongside Yahoo search results in the U.S., but excludes their affiliate marketing and premium publisher partners.

An additional announcement made on Wednesday was the acquisition of IndexTools’ analytics business. Bassel Ojjeh, senior vice president and head of Yahoo!s Strategic Data Solutions group, stated “We expect that the IndexTools technology platform will provide our customers the opportunity to more quickly uncover and act on these insights, enhancing Yahoo!s status as a partner of choice in online marketing and the must buy for the worlds advertisers.”

Thursday Yahoo! continued to announce improvements on their offerings, stating that they signed a deal with Major League Baseball to carry, live and streaming, every game of the 2008 season on Yahoo! sports.

Yahoo! is also looking at other options as an alternate to the bid by Microsoft, including talks with Time Warner regarding combining with AOL. Although the terms of the deal are still being discussed, it includes merging AOL into Yahoo!.

Despite the troubles facing Yahoo!, they seem to be hastily continuing to make improvements and additions to their products in an attempt to remain its own entity. Hopefully these efforts will help Yahoo! to achieve their goals and avoid the seemingly unavoidable at this point.
